Last night had a lot going on while also maintaining that now all-too-familiar COVID lockdown feeling that there’s nothing left to look forward to. One proud papa, LaVar Ball, was having a hell of a night.
LaMelo Ball was selected third in the NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets. Very cool. An impressive feat. While I’m not a huge basketball fan (despite my hot NBA takes), the draft is still mildly interesting to watch — even just for the fashion. This year was quite different. While it was still heartwarming to see people’s hardworking pay off and dreams come true, it was lacking the flair for the dramatics (fashion and hair) it usually has due to being done remotely. Flair, however, was found in spades on a different channel where another Ball bro was showcasing his talents.
Lonzo Ball was revealed to be the Whatchamacallit on Fox’s hit show The Masked Singer. The Masked Singer has a decent audience despite it being extremely unfunny. Known for his outlandish predictions, Judge/Doctor/Comedian Ken Jeong guessed correctly. A true shock to all, including the viewers who did not seem to know who Lonzo Ball was. There was a bigger reaction for the reveal of a singing doctor who went viral during quarantine. Game recognize game, and it was evident. The studio audience was packed with small ballers.
I do not feel like this weird familial dichotomy that took place on network TV is getting the recognition it deserves. The Ball Family is an enigma I am annoyed yet entranced by. Only a few outlets have covered it and minimal fan reaction was found on social media. After doing a little research, I quickly understood why this seemed to fly by everyone’s radar.
